Ex-minister Udayan Guha arrested from Phoolbagan in extortion & embezzlement case
Police have reopened the investigation into the 2020 attack on the convoy of BJP leader J. P. Nadda in Diamond Harbour, intensifying scrutiny on Jahangir Khan, also known as "Pushpa", who was named as an accused in the case. Investigators have stated that several important aspects of the case were not adequately examined during the original probe, prompting authorities to launch a fresh investigation. The development comes shortly after Jahangir Khan's recent arrest in another matter.
According to investigators, shortcomings in the earlier inquiry allegedly prevented effective action against the accused and allowed them to secure legal advantages. The attack on Nadda's convoy had drawn national attention in 2020 while he was travelling in Diamond Harbour. Jahangir Khan's name was included in the FIR registered in connection with the incident. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, who was reportedly travelling with Nadda on the day of the attack, later recalled the incident and stated that the occupants might not have survived had the vehicle not been bulletproof.
Jahangir Khan was also at the centre of controversy during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections in the Falta constituency. Following allegations of electoral malpractice during the second phase of polling, the Election Commission cancelled the election and ordered a re-poll. Before the re-election could take place, Jahangir Khan withdrew his candidature. The re-poll was held on May 21 and the results were declared on May 24. After withdrawing from the contest, he remained out of public view for an extended period before being arrested while allegedly attempting to cross the border into Nepal.
Local residents have levelled multiple allegations against Jahangir Khan, including intimidation of political opponents, extortion of business owners and involvement in various illegal activities. Reports of public dissatisfaction with his conduct had emerged even before the political change in the state. Some members within his own party had also publicly questioned his activities.
After completing an initial five-day period of police custody, Jahangir Khan was produced before the Diamond Harbour ACJM Court on Sunday. Police informed the court that additional time was required to investigate the allegations against him and collect further evidence. The court subsequently granted six more days of police custody. During his appearance in Falta under heavy police escort, witnesses claimed that he was seen with folded hands, his head bowed, and seeking forgiveness.
